Seun Kuti ordained general overseer by fellow prison inmates as he leads in prayer sessions
Embattled Afrobeats singer, Seun Kuti is reportedly having a hard time in detention at the State Criminal, Investigations, and Intelligence Department, SCIID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos, where he’s been crowned “General Overseer” after being remanded by a Yaba Chief Magistrate Court.
Vanguard reported that after the remand order was given, Seun was then taken to the cell to join other suspected criminals. His first shocker was being ordered to keep standing by the leader of the inmates who has a hoarse, deep baritone voice.
He was subsequently rejected by other inmates who began banging on their metal protective door, asking that he be taken out of the cell.
Seeing that this attracted little or no attention from the police guards, the singer began negotiating with them. He reportedly called his wife to get him N25,000 which he handed over to the inmates’ leader.
After he handed over the money, the inmates accepted him and provided a space for him to sit down. The incident infuriated Seun Kuti who began a hunger strike and also rejected food brought by his wife. He began eating again after a day and a half.
The singer has now been reportedly crowned the General Overseer of the cell and a bible was handed over to him. He now leads the inmates in prayer sessions whenever the need arises after which they would all chorus: GO, GO.
When a journalist visited Panti around 2:30 pm yesterday, May 19, Seun was seen clutching the Bible tightly with his left hand while climbing the stairs leading to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge, Waheed Ayilara. He was later led down the stairs, back into the cell.
