Rivers state police commissioner, Emeka Nwonyi removed over attack on governor Sim Fubara

The Rivers State Police Command has Wednesday gotten a new Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu to coordinate police operations in the state.

Disu’s deployment to the Rivers State Police Command by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, takes immediate effect.

The new Rivers’s CP would be replacing CP Nwonyi Emeka, whose removal from the state had been demanded by youths and several other stakeholders in the state, who accused the outgoing CP of playing a pivotal role in the teargas and water canon’s attack on the state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara after a failed Impeachment attempt on him by some lawmakers.

Governor Fubara following the attack on him on Monday, October 30, 2023, directly accused the former CP Emeka and his Deputy of attempting to kill him, adding that they supervised teargas canisters and water canon shots at him when he visited the state House of Assembly chambers which got burnt overnight

to assess the extent of damage.

An accusation the Police had admitted, adding that the attack on the Governor was in error.

Disu’s deployment to Rivers State came barely seven months after he was promoted alongside 32 others from the rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) to Commissioner of Police (CPs) and was subsequently appointed by the IGP as his principal staff, leading and coordinating the security team attached to the IGP’s office and others.

The newly deployed CP had earlier served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja, and previously served at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for Rivers Command as the Deputy Head of the Unit.

Considering Disu’s dedication to the duties assigned to him, the IGP had before now appointed him to lead the Nigeria Police Contingent to the African Union (AU) Peace Keeping Mission in Dafur, Sudan.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, appointed Disu as Commissioner of Police, Rivers Command, to ensure efficiency in the policing system across the state.

Disu’s appointments, it was gathered was contained in a signal already dispatched which takes immediate effect.

Aside from Disu’s appointment as Rivers CP, the IGP also appointed seven others to lead different commands, as part of the ongoing measures towards strengthening security, tackling violent crimes, and enhancing optimal coordination of policing operations across Nigeria.

The seven other CPs appointed and redeployed include CP George Chuku as commissioner for BNS Command, CP Ahmed Tijani to Jigawa Command, CP Dan Shawulu to Niger Command, CP Usman Hayatu to GBS Command, CP Danjuma Aboki to IMS Command, CP Isyaku Muhammed to OSS Command and others.
