Final year computer science student of Delta state polytechnic, shot dead by his hostel caretaker
Ishie Abraham, a final-year student of the Department of Computer Science at the Delta State Polytechnic in Otefe-Oghara has been allegedly shot to death by his hostel caretaker.
SaharaReporters gathered that the misunderstanding between Abraham and the caretaker – a former chairman of the community – was caused by a generator.
The community chairman tried to resolve the dispute but the caretaker was not satisfied, according to a source.
The caretaker reportedly went back to harass Abraham on the same day and in the process shot the student.
The incident later led to a protest by the students in the community.
The spokesman for the state police command, DSP Edafe Bright, confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on Thursday.
He added that the suspect was at large.
“Suspect is at large, but the command is on his trail,” he said.
Meanwhile, a factional national leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), in a statement signed by its president, Comrade Rioborue Deniran, on Wednesday, called on the authorities to urgently seek justice for the deceased.
NANS offered its condolences to the polytechnic community and the immediate family and friends of the deceased and noted that it was committed to ensuring justice was served.
The statement reads in part: “We received the sad news of the death of Mr. Ishie Abraham, a student of Delta State Polytechnic Otefe-Oghara. The circumstances surrounding the death of such a young and vibrant man are completely condemnable, as the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) frowns upon the killing of its members.
“We are calling on the security authorities, particularly the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, and the state government to urgently seek justice for this promising young man whose life was cut short.
“Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the polytechnic community, especially the immediate family and friends of the deceased. The apex student body is committed to ensuring justice in this tragic incident.
“We call for calm and orderliness among our students, while urging the police to make immediate arrests and prosecute the culprit(s).”
“Lastly, we strongly discourage any involvement in criminal activities, as the leadership of NANS will never tolerate any form of injustice against our students. None of us should be a victim of such a tragic fate,” the statement added.
