Middle aged man sentenced 15 months jail for stealing fan, mat from mosque in Abuja

One Nasir Idris was given a 15-month prison sentence on Thursday for robbing a mosque of a prayer mat and fan.

A Dei-Dei Grade I Area Court in Abuja handed down the sentence.

Idris, however, was given the choice by the court to pay a N50,000 fine.

Idris was detained by someone named Ali Zuma on March 17 and taken to the police at Zuba, which is also in the Federal Capital Territory, according to testimony given to the court earlier by the prosecution, Mr. Chinedu Ogada.

Ogada said Idris trespassed on the mosque at Dei-Dei and stole the fan and mat, but was caught in the act.

According to him, Idris admitted to the crime during an investigation and confessed to having been in prison twice also for theft.

The prosecutor said the offence committed by Idris at Dei-Dei contravene the Penal Code of the FCT.

Idris pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for leniency.

The presiding judge, Mr. Saminu Suleiman while giving the judgment, warned Idris to desist from committing crimes and to be of good behaviour.
