Court convicts female police officer for hiring her service gun to armed robbers
In a sting operation, the Hawks, a branch of the South African police has arraigned and prosecuted a female police office for loaning her gun to robbers for R50,000.
Constable Noxolo Perseverance Job, 39, who was attached to the Protection and Security Services (PSS) unit in Bloemfontein was arrested for recruiting accomplices to stage a robbery at the PSS offices and lending her official firearm to the robbers for R50,000.
The prosecutor stated how Job’s scheme was uncovered by a whistle-blower who alerted the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team. This crucial tip-off led to Job’s arrest during a mock transaction, preventing the planned theft from taking place.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks, is the branch of the South African Police Service which investigates organised crime, economic crime, corruption, and other serious crime referred to it by the President or another division of the police.
The case has drawn significant attention due to the severity of Job’s breach of trust and misuse of her position as a police officer.
Her conviction was based on conspiracy to commit armed robbery and contravention of the Firearms Control Act. The charges reflect the gravity of her offenses and the threat they posed to public safety. Her conviction marks a significant victory for law enforcement and the judicial system in tackling corruption within the police force.
The court has remanded the case to December 9 for sentencing. This final phase will determine the extent of Job’s punishment and serve as a stark reminder of the consequences for those who betray the trust placed in them by their profession.
