Ganduje’s vow to capture Ondo is a threat to democracy—PDP cries out
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized a recent statement attributed to Umar Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), regarding the conduct of the forthcoming governorship election.
Ganduje’s remarks suggested that the APC aims to “capture” Ondo State in the upcoming poll and use it as a stepping stone to secure control over Oyo and Osun states.
Reacting on Monday, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, described Ganduje’s statement as “reckless” and “irresponsible,” arguing that it reveals a troubling desire for totalitarian control in Nigeria’s political landscape.
He highlighted that the term “capture,” as defined in the dictionary, implies taking by force or strategy, which he equated to treating the people of these states as “prisoners of war.”
“This is a warning,” Ologunagba said, emphasizing the rich political history and strong-willed nature of the people in the South West.
He reminded the public that this region has traditionally been a stronghold for democratic values and has a history of holding leaders accountable.
He drew parallels between Ganduje’s comments and the political climate of the early 1980s, recalling the political turmoil that led to the collapse of the Second Republic, particularly referencing the attempts to impose leadership through electoral manipulation.
“We are witnessing a repeat of history,” Ologunagba warned, urging Ganduje to be cautious about his remarks, as they could lead to him being deemed “persona non grata” in the South West.
Ologunagba asserted that the people of Ondo State are prepared to vote for the PDP and will not be intimidated by threats or attempts to suppress their democratic rights.
He called for the APC to respect the electoral process and ensure that the November 16 election is free and fair.
The PDP spokesman affirmed that the people of Ondo State will not be “captured” and will assert their rights to determine their political future. “The APC should watch it and stay clear of Ondo State,” he warned, signaling that any attempt to undermine the electoral process would be met with resistance from the electorate.
