One month to end of 2024 Tinubu yet to submit 2025 budget to National Assembly
Barely one month to the end of this year the president is yet to submit the 2025 annual budget to the national assembly for verifications and inputs.
This is in total disregard of the existing norm where budgets are presented to the national assembly in the month of September or early October for work on it to start in earnest.
During the regime of Goodluck Jonathan with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as minister of finance budget are submitted on time for thorough overhaul by the national assembly before eventual passage.
Meanwhile the Senate committee chairman on finance Senator Musa Sanni has come out in strong defence that it’s not too late for submission of the next year’s budget to the national assembly.
Speaking on channels television Senator Sanni said Tinubu is taking his time to submit the budget in order to avoid lapses.
Debunking the concerns Nigerians usually express on the budget which the senator described as ‘noises” he said Tinubu is ensuring that everything is checked before the presentation of the budget.
The implication of late submission of the budget to National Assembly is that it will make room for hurried passage of the budget as senators will not have enough time to panel beat the budget to bring out the best for the country.
This is particularly feared in an Akpabio led Senate which many have described as rubber stamp.
Also the senators are billed to commence their annual yelutide break on or before middle of December and as such may not have enough time to tinker the budget very as they may just pass it as received.
Going by traditions set by Buhari for the ruling APC party the budget is expected to be passed on or before the end of December 2024 for implementation to start in January 2025.
