Canadian Manitoba Public Insurance receives over 500 claims following Friday’s foggy weather motor accidents & three deaths recorded

La Broquerie emergency crews responded to this crash in Friday’s storm.

Manitoba Public Insurance says blizzard conditions on Friday contributed to a number of collisions being reported to MPI.

The combination of fresh snow and strong winds, in excess of 100 kilometres per hour on Friday resulted in whiteout conditions for parts of Southern Manitoba. Emergency crews were kept busy on Friday, responding to numerous crashes, including several multi-vehicle collisions.

According to RCMP, a 30-year-old woman from Winnipeg died as part of a seven-vehicle crash near Fermor Avenue and Symington Road. Officers believe she was struck by another vehicle when she exited her own.

Tara Seel, Media and Public Relations Lead with MPI says they received 511 collision claims for Friday. She says MPI cannot attribute all of these claims to the winter driving conditions, as they have not analyzed all of the data to see the cause. However, she notes, blizzard conditions in many areas of the province were a contributing factor.

Of the 511 claims, 31 of those were from Steinbach, there were 15 from Ste. Anne, 12 from Blumenort and 10 fro Lorette.

The top 10 claim locations in Manitoba are as follows:

Winnipeg – 268 claims
Steinbach – 31
West St. Paul – 26
Ste. Anne – 15
Blumenort – 12
Brandon – 12
Headingley – 12
Portage la Prairie – 12
RM of St. Andrews – 11
Lorette – 10

Seel says MPI expects these totals to increase, as collision claims for Friday will continue to come in over the next weeks and months. These numbers are accurate as of Monday.
