Air Peace suspends & grounds all flights nationwide as a result of Nimet strike action
In a significant disruption to air travel, Air Peace, one of Nigeria’s leading airlines, has announced the suspension of all flight operations nationwide with immediate effect. The decision comes as a result of an ongoing strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which provides critical weather reports essential for safe flight landings.
According to Dr. Henry Ndiulo, Corporate Communications Manager at Air Peace, the airline has chosen to prioritize safety by grounding its flights until NiMet resumes full service.
“Without the Current Nowcast of Hazardous Weather (CNH) reports from NiMet, flight safety cannot be guaranteed, especially during this season of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms,” Dr. Ndiulo explained.
The strike by NiMet, Dr Ndiulo stressed, has made it impossible for Air Peace to receive necessary weather updates from the control tower, which are crucial for navigating Nigeria’s unpredictable weather conditions. As a safety-first airline, Air Peace has taken the prudent decision to suspend operations until the situation returns to normal.
Passengers with scheduled flights will be contacted with updates and options for rescheduling their journeys. The airline apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciates the understanding of its customers during this period.
The development highlights the critical role NiMet plays in ensuring aviation safety in Nigeria. As the strike continues, travelers are advised to check with their airlines for updates on flight schedules and plan accordingly.
Air Peace’s decision underscores the importance of prioritizing safety in aviation operations, even in the face of operational challenges.
