Food inflation dropping as prices of yam, tomatoes are declining —- Bayo Onanuga, Presidential spokesman
President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has posited that food inflation is declining.
But a cross-section of Nigerians who called on a national radio Wazobia FM countered the claim saying prices of food items are still on the rooftops. For instance they said a tuber of yam still sells for N8,000 & N9000 despite the fact that they are newly harvested yams.
Onanuga stated that the prices of yam, tomatoes, and other foodstuffs are drastically reducing.
Posting on X, he wrote: “Food inflation is coming down as prices of yam, tomatoes decline massively.”
He was reacting to a report that the price of a basket of tomatoes has dropped.
The report said a big basket of tomatoes in Ketu market is currently selling for about N55,000 to N60,000 — down from an average of N150,000 a few months ago.
He said a large basket of habanero pepper (rodo) is now selling for an average of N25,000, compared to N55,000 at the peak of the price surge.
