Blame South -East governors for continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu—-Ohanaeze

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Thursday, accused Southeast governors of being responsible for the delay in securing the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The group claimed the governors’ inaction signalled that Kanu might have been sacrificed ahead of the 2027 political landscape.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Secretary General of the Chidi Ibeh-led faction of Ohanaeze, expressed disappointment over the silence of the Southeast governors. He pointed out that despite Justice Binta Nyako recusing herself from Kanu’s trial, highlighting both judicial integrity and the need for political accountability, the governors have remained inactive.

Ohanaeze condemned the governors’ failure to engage President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Kanu’s release. The group emphasized the lack of political will shown by the governors, which has left many Igbo political prisoners, including Kanu, languishing in correctional facilities.

Isiguzoro urged the Southeast governors to fulfil their promises made on July 2, 2024, by visiting President Tinubu “to advocate earnestly for Nnamdi Kanu’s release, a necessary action to restore faith in their leadership and commitment to our people’s welfare”.

He acknowledged Kanu’s frustration and loss of confidence in the judicial process, noting that these feelings reflect the broader concerns of many who are closely following the case.

“Nnamdi Kanu’s expressions of anger and loss of confidence in the judicial process are justified, reflecting the sentiments of many who have been closely observing these proceedings with great apprehension”.

As the 2024 Igbo Day celebrations approach on September 29, Isiguzoro called on Ndigbo worldwide to pray for Kanu’s release. He also urged the leaders to reflect on their actions and work toward redemption.

Ohanaeze concluded by reaffirming its belief that with the right political will and collective effort, justice can be achieved for all unjustly detained individuals.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo firmly believes that with the right political will and collective action, we can illuminate the path toward justice and freedom for all those unjustly held. May we find the resolve to uphold the dignity and aspirations of the Ndigbo people.”
