Nigeria Super Eagles narrowly manage 1-0 win against Libya in crucial AFCON Qualifier match
The Super Eagles of Nigeria has secured a vital 1-0 victory over Libya in a tense Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Wednesday night at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
Fissayo Dele-Bashiru second half shot was enough to separate the two sides, boosting Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco.
Both teams started cautiously, with Libya putting up a disciplined defense against Nigeria’s attacking threats.
The home side, led by coach Augustine Eguavoen, dominated possession in both halves but struggled to break down a resilient Libyan backline in the first half.
Nigeria’s forwards, Moses Simon, Ademola Lookman and Victor Boniface, were kept at bay, as Libya’s defense absorbed the pressure.
The second half saw Nigeria shift gears, increasing their tempo and intensity. Their persistence paid off in the 87th minute when Moses Simon delivered a perfect cross from the wing into the box with Dele Bashiru smashing the ball past the Libyan goalkeeper, giving Nigeria the lead.
The win strengthens Nigeria’s position in the AFCON qualifying group where they lead with 7 points from 3 games.
