NDLEA is the most corrupt, compromised government agency in Nigeria– Senator Ashiru
Kwara South senator, Oyelola Yisa Ashiru, has declared that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, is the most corrupt and compromised government agency in Nigeria.
He stated this while contributing to the debate on a ‘Bill for an Act to establish National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation’, stating that NDLEA has failed in its mandate woefully thereby giving credence to creation of another drug related agency.
The failure of NDLEA, he insisted, has resulted in the high rate of drug trafficking going on in the country.
He said, “The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency is corrupt and compromised, hence, I support the creation of National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation.”
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau, who presided over the plenary, did not comment before he allowed the debate to continue.
The Bill for an Act to establish National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation was sponsored by Senator Sani Hanga Rufai representing Kano Central Senatorial District.
Rufai, while speaking on the general principles of the bill, said, “The proposed agency will coordinate and promote drug awareness, prevent substance abuse and facilitate the rehabilitation of drug users and for related matters.”
