Outrage, protests & condemnation greet Tinubu’s scrapping of the all important Niger Delta ministry
Wide condemnation and protests have greeted the news of president Tinubu’s scrapping of the Niger Delta ministry of the oil rich South South geo-political region.
President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council had on Wednesday disclosed the scrapping of the Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of Sports Development.
In a tweet by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga, the action was arrived at during the FEC meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.
The statement read, “President Tinubu and Federal Executive Council scrap Niger Delta Ministry and the Ministry of sports development.
“There will now be a ministry of regional development to oversee all the regional development commissions, such as Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission , North East Development Commission.”
“The National Sports Commission will take over the role of the Ministry of Sports,” he stated.
Additionally, the FEC approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy, creating a single entity.
Meanwhile there has been wife condemnation of the scrapping of the Niger Delta ministry particularly from people of the South South.
They are wondering why such a ministry they describe as hen that lays the golden egg should be scrapped at this material point in time insisting that since Niger Delta region produce oil and suffers attendant oil pollution the ministry should not have been scrapped.
According to some who preferred to be anonymous they said they cannot predict the next line of action of the militants as most of them are obviously agitated.
Elder Statesman and Niger Delta strong man Pa Edwin Clarke in strong and unmistakable terms condemned the Niger Delta ministry.
According to him he said there was no need for the scrapping since the ministry is used for the development of the pollution ravaged south south geo-political region.
