Obasanjo’s saying Tinubu took office without a plan is borne out of bitterness over Tinubu’s success–Presidency blasts back”

In a sharp rebuke to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Presidency has criticized his claims that President Bola Tinubu took office “without a plan,” dismissing the statement as unfounded and driven by bitterness. The comments have sparked widespread reactions, including backlash from pro-Yoruba groups who accuse Obasanjo of harboring envy over Tinubu’s early achievements.

Tinubu’s Aides Respond to Obasanjo’s Criticism

Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu on Media and Publicity, responded to Obasanjo’s remarks, highlighting Tinubu’s bold economic reforms, many of which were policies Obasanjo himself initiated but failed to complete.

Ajayi pointed out that one of Obasanjo’s core goals was the deregulation of the downstream oil sector, but the former president backed down due to pressure from labor unions and civil society groups.

“Twenty years after Obasanjo’s failed attempt at deregulation, President Tinubu has demonstrated the courage to fully implement policies aimed at strengthening the economy and improving public financial management,” Ajayi remarked, defending Tinubu’s economic actions, including the fuel subsidy removal.

Yoruba Group Lashes Out at Obasanjo

The Conscience of Yoruba Nation, a group linked to Afenifere, also criticized Obasanjo, accusing him of being envious of Tinubu’s success. The group’s Convener, Kole Omololu, said that Obasanjo’s harsh remarks were driven by “hatred and bitterness” over the President’s achievements in a short span.

“Tinubu was well prepared for leadership and demonstrated that by hitting the ground running as soon as he was sworn in. Obasanjo’s remarks only reflect his resentment for the accomplishments of this administration,” the group said in a statement.

Atiku Reunites With Obasanjo Amid Criticism

Meanwhile, in a related development, former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, recently reunited with Obasanjo. The pair met during the 25th-anniversary celebration of the Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF), founded by Atiku’s wife, Titi Abubakar.

Atiku expressed his excitement at reconnecting with his former boss, referring to their meeting as a “profound privilege.” He also thanked Obasanjo for his support in passing the WOTCLEF Bill in 2003, which helped Nigeria make significant strides in the fight against trafficking.

As tensions continue between Obasanjo and Tinubu, the ongoing spat highlights deeper political rivalries, with the current administration focused on defending its progress and silencing its critics.
