Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Executives visits militant Tompolo in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri to pay homage
The Nigerian Bar Association NBA, under the leadership of Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, yesterday, 18th November 2024 embarked on a significant advocacy visit to the Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.
. The delegation met with His Royal Majesty Oboro Gbaraun II (JP), Aketekpe, Agadagba, as well as prominent figures like Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), Chairman of Tantita Security Services, and his Vice Chairman, Matthew Tonlagha.
This visit underscores the NBA’s commitment to addressing critical issues affecting Nigeria’s economy, governance, and justice system, with particular emphasis on oil theft and its far-reaching consequences.
During the visit, Mazi Afam Osigwe reiterated his stance on the need for the government to take decisive action against oil theft, which he had previously emphasized at the NEC Meeting in Enugu. He highlighted the devastating impact of this crime on Nigeria’s economy, stating:
“Oil theft in Nigeria is not just the loss of a valuable resource but a symptom of deeper issues in leadership and governance.”
The NBA President’s remarks reflect the association’s dedication to combating economic sabotage and promoting accountability in governance.
His Royal Majesty Oboro Gbaraun II welcomed the NBA delegation to the Gbaramatu Kingdom, acknowledging the Bar’s efforts to address pressing national issues. The Spokesperson of the Palace, Chief Godspower Benekama, PhD, made a heartfelt appeal for mentorship and support for aspiring lawyers from the kingdom, stating:
“We need you to mentor our children who are going to law school.”
In response, Mazi Osigwe pledged the NBA’s support in mentoring young lawyers from the Gbaramatu Kingdom and addressing the lack of judicial infrastructure in the region. He noted the absence of a magistrate court in the community, emphasizing the importance of access to justice for all citizens.
The King further urged lawmakers and judges to adopt a more hands-on approach in their judgments, stressing:
“Before concluding judgments, endeavour to see for yourself. Some judgments are not orderly.”
He also highlighted the neglect of the Gbaramatu Kingdom by the government despite the region’s contribution to the nation’s economy through its natural resources.
The NBA’s advocacy mission extended to a meeting with the Chairman of Tantita Security Services, Government Ekpemupolo popularly known as Tompolo. Tompolo praised the NBA for its initiative to join the fight against oil theft, noting the recent increase in oil production to 1.8 million barrels per day as reported by the NNPC.
During the interaction, Tompolo shared his personal experiences with the Nigerian government and the justice system, emphasizing the challenges faced in his efforts to combat oil theft.
The NBA also met with the Vice Chairman of Tantita Security Services, Matthew Tonlagha. Both leaders expressed their commitment to working with the NBA to address oil theft and its related legal issues.
As part of its advocacy efforts, the NBA pledged to provide legal services to prosecute oil offenders and also look into the pending Maritime Bill and support legislation related to the Maritime University.
The NBA’s visit to the Gbaramatu Kingdom reflects its commitment to promoting justice, economic reform, and community development. By engaging with traditional leaders, security agencies, and stakeholders in the oil industry, the association aims to address systemic issues and foster collaboration for a better Nigeria.
