Trainee-teacher in Ogun state attempts suicide after mistakenly blinding 11 year student with her cane
A trainee teacher in Ogun State, Adeola A. Adeyemo, has been arrested after an 11-year-old pupil, Alao Idera, lost her right eye in a classroom incident.
The unfortunate event occurred on Tuesday, December 2, at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School in Obada Oko, where Adeyemo, a 400-level student of Tai Solarin University, Ijagun, was undergoing teaching practice.
According to the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola, the pupil accidentally ran into a cane held by Adeyemo while she was addressing the class.
The impact caused severe damage to the pupil’s eye, necessitating the removal of the eyeball during surgery at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta.
The pupil’s family reported the incident to the police, leading to Adeyemo’s arrest.
SP Odutola revealed that the teacher, visibly shaken by the outcome, attempted to ingest harmful substances upon learning that the injury had resulted in the pupil’s blindness.
