Millions demand for Dele Farotimi’s book ‘Nigeria & it’s criminal justice system’ less than 24 hours after arrest by Afe Babalola
The demand for “Nigeria and It’s Criminial Justice System” , a book written by Dele Farotimi has gone through the roof as people across the ccountry scramble to purchase a copies.
Farotimi was arrested in a commando style in Lagos on the 3rd of December in Lagos following a petition by a Senior Lawyer Afe Babalola who claims to have been defamed by the content of the book.
Dele Farotimi, a firebrand human rights Lawyer has been a critic of the corruption in the Nigerian government including the Judiciary.
He was arraigned on a 9 count charge at an Ado Ekiti Magistrate Court and remanded in Prison custody on the 4th of December 2024.
The Nigerian Bar Association has issued a statement against his arrest and thousands of other lawyers are standing in his support.
Some lawyers have also made a good stance of the position that Farotimi should provide the evidence of his allegations before receiving their support which is a valid position.
The Criminal Justice system in Nigeria has been bedevilled by a lot of challenges including weighty allegations of corruption , incompetence and inhuman bail conditions for poor offenders.
Many experienced lawyers have abandoned Criminal law practice as a result of the hassles involved in the process and the increasing unpredictability in the outcomes.
Farotimi’s arrest may open up a Pandora box many stakeholders in the Justice system already know but discuss in hush voices.
Dele Farotimi is believed to have the support of some well placed people in the legal community who are determined to save the Justice system from a mighty fall.
There is a rumour that some people are frantically intervening in the case to “kill it” not for the love of Farotimi but to prevent the damage that may happen to the reputation of some highly placed stakeholders if the matter escalates.
Dele Farotimi ‘s book is expected to sell millions of copies in the coming weeks.
