Ancient city of Ibadan is currently in the mourning mood following the passing of its revered traditional ruler, His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland. The monarch, who ascended the throne just a year ago, reportedly joined his ancestors in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025.
The news of his passing comes just two days after he marked his 90th birthday on July 5, making the loss even more poignant for the people of Ibadan and Oyo State at large.
Oba Olakulehin was officially installed as Olubadan on July 12, 2024, when he received his staff of office from the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde. His reign, though brief, was marked by grace, wisdom, and a commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the Ibadan people.
Before his ascension, Oba Olakulehin held the prestigious title of Balogun Olubadan, and emerged as the next in line following the passing of his predecessor, Oba (Dr.) Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, who died on March 14, 2024, at the age of 81.
Born on July 5, 1935, Oba Olakulehin lived a long and impactful life. His dedication to tradition, community development, and peaceful leadership leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations.
As the city reflects on his life and reign, Ibadan indigenes and Yoruba people across the globe pay tribute to a monarch who embodied the dignity and strength of the Olubadan institution.
