The Nigeria Police Force has responded to widespread reports surrounding the arrest and detention of activist Omoyele Sowore, describing them as “falsehoods and disinformation” aimed at maligning state institutions and the office of the Inspector-General of Police.
In a press release issued Friday, August 9, 2025, with Ref No. CZ.5300/FPRD/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.6/483, the Force said Sowore was arrested over “credible, corroborated allegations” involving criminal offences, including forgery, cyberstalking, and other infractions under active investigation.
Police spokesperson, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that Sowore was released on bail within the constitutionally required 48 hours, as provided by Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and is expected to appear in court soon to answer the charges.
On the viral images showing Sowore with a bandaged arm, the Force dismissed claims of torture, insisting that the bandage was part of his personal belongings before his arrest. According to the statement, the Inspector-General of Police ordered an internal probe to determine how the bandage appeared during custody, noting that Sowore twice refused medical examinations by independent police medical teams on 7th and 8th August.
The Police also clarified that his detention was backed by a valid court order, stressing that all actions taken were lawful and devoid of political undertones. The statement urged the public and media to avoid sensationalism and uphold responsible reporting.
“The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its commitment to human rights, the rule of law, and justice without fear or favour. No individual is above the law,” the statement concluded.
