The Lagos State Police Command has announced the passing of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Matilda Umiah Ngbanoyen, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Festac Division, who died while receiving medical treatment in Lagos.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on October 24, 2025, at about 11:30 p.m., at Mayriamville Medical Centre, Bode Thomas, Surulere, where the late officer was undergoing a medical procedure for fibroid treatment.
Following the incident, a delegation from the Command visited the hospital to confirm the development and make necessary arrangements. The remains of the officer were subsequently moved to a public morgue for preservation and autopsy.
A statement from the Command indicated that arrangements were underway, in collaboration with the deceased officer’s family, to accord her a befitting burial, befitting her years of meritorious service.
CSP Ngbanoyen was widely described as a dedicated, disciplined, and result-oriented officer, who served the Nigeria Police Force with outstanding professionalism and commitment to duty.
Born with a deep sense of service, she was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on April 19, 2010, and rose steadily through the ranks. Until her death, she was the first female DPO of Festac Division.
Over the course of her distinguished career, CSP Ngbanoyen held several strategic positions, including:
Secretary to the then Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Olusegun Odumosu;
Crime Officer, Dolphin Estate Division, Ikoyi;
General Investigation/Fingerprint Expert, State CID, Panti;
Officer-in-Charge, Public Complaints Bureau;
Public Information Officer, African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM); and
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command (appointed December 12, 2020).
She was decorated as a Superintendent of Police (SP) in February 2021, later served as DPO Ilupeju, and subsequently at Iponri Division, before her redeployment to Festac Division in 2025. She was promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) in January 2025.
An alumna of various professional courses — including the Advanced Detective Course (ADC) and the Human Rights Protection Course — CSP Ngbanoyen was known for her passion for justice, human rights, and effective policing.
She is survived by her husband and children.
The Lagos State Police Command extended its heartfelt condolences to her family, colleagues, and friends, describing her demise as a great loss to the Force and the nation.
