The former director of DSS Mike Ejiofor has come out to say that contrary to inspector general of police Kayode Egbetokun that only 11,566 Police men are in involved in performing unofficial security guards to privileged Nigerians.
Instead he said that over 120, 000 police officers do this unofficial security guards.
Mike Ejiofor stated this in a channel television interview with Seun Okinbaloye.
There are reports, including one cited as from a European Union Agency for Asylum and mentioned by some local analysts and former officials like Mike Ejiofor (former DSS director), which estimated the actual number of officers on various forms of unofficial or unrecorded guard duties for private individuals and politicians to be much higher, often exceeding 100,000.
The core of the issue is the difference between the formally approved police protection details (the 11,000 figure) and the actual total number of officers de facto performing private guard roles, many of whom may be off the books, which critics argue is a major distortion of available police manpower for general public safety.
The IGP has emphasized that the withdrawal of the 11,566 officers is a firm presidential order that will be implemented without political pressure.
Up till now there are still confirmed reports that some police officers still serve as security guards to some Nigerians.
A radio station listener called in to say that his uncle who is a private citizen still has about 15 Police men guarding him.
