Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Shan George, has stirred conversations on the institution of marriage with her candid remarks on the importance of respect between couples, describing it as a non-negotiable ingredient for a successful union.
In a statement that has since generated widespread reactions, the actress emphasised that while love is often celebrated as the foundation of marriage, respect is the sustaining force that keeps the relationship healthy and enduring.
According to her, one of the uncomfortable truths many people shy away from discussing about marriage is the role respect plays after the wedding vows have been exchanged.
“When two people marry, age no longer matters. You become mates, yes, but not competitors,” she stated, stressing that marriage should not be seen as a platform for rivalry or dominance.
Shan George warned against the growing trend where familiarity breeds contempt in relationships. She noted that excessive closeness without boundaries often leads to a loss of regard for one another, particularly when partners begin to “see finish” and abandon courtesy and restraint.
“Marriage is not a license to talk anyhow or behave like there are no boundaries,” she cautioned.
The actress further observed that constant talking down, shouting, and public embarrassment within the home can gradually destroy the bond between couples. According to her, such patterns of behaviour may inflict deeper damage on a marriage than even infidelity.
“Love without respect is noise. Respect is the oil that keeps marriage from grinding and breaking,” she remarked, using a vivid metaphor to underscore her point.
Shan George also discouraged nagging and verbal hostility as tools for resolving marital conflicts, noting that peace cannot be forced through aggression. Instead, she urged couples to demonstrate love through their tone, actions, and mutual honour.
“You can’t nag your way into peace. If you truly love your man, show it in how you talk, how you act, and how you honour him. A disrespectful home will never be a happy home,” she concluded.
Her comments have added to ongoing public discourse about modern marriage dynamics, gender roles, and the balance between equality and respect in relationships. While opinions remain divided, many agree that her message highlights the need for intentional communication, mutual understanding, and sustained regard between partners in building lasting homes.
