A chieftain of the (ADC), Olumide Akpata, has revealed that he and former presidential candidate Peter Obi separately received intelligence reports warning of an alleged assassination attempt targeting them during a recent political engagement in Benin City, Edo State.
Akpata, a new entrant into the ADC and a prominent political figure in Edo State, disclosed that the threat was communicated to both him and Obi by what he described as reliable and independent sources.
According to him, the information suggested that the venue of their meeting in Benin City would soon come under attack by unidentified individuals.
The incident, which has since generated concern within political circles, reportedly occurred during a gathering attended by top ADC figures, including former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Oyegun, and other party chieftains.
Separate Warnings, Same Threat
Recounting the tense episode, Akpata stated that both he and Obi received separate alerts about the looming danger, a development he said underscored the credibility of the intelligence.
“Peter Obi and I received information separately from reliable sources that the venue we were at would soon come under attack by unknown persons,” Akpata disclosed.
He added that the warnings were specific enough to raise immediate concern and prompt swift action from security personnel attached to the political leaders and the event organizers.
“I was in harm’s way and there was no doubt alongside other people in Benin. Thankfully, due to the efforts of the security personnel, what could have been a dastardly act was averted,” he said.
Though Akpata did not provide further operational details about the nature of the alleged attack or the identities of those suspected to be behind it, he emphasized that the intelligence was taken seriously and that preventive measures were promptly implemented.
Heightened Security Measures
Sources within the ADC confirmed that security was immediately tightened around the venue once the warnings were received. Movement in and out of the premises was reportedly restricted, while additional security operatives were deployed to monitor the surroundings.
While no attack eventually occurred, Akpata maintained that the situation could have turned tragic if the intelligence had been ignored.
Political observers note that such threats, whether substantiated or not, reflect the growing tension within Nigeria’s political environment as realignments and preparations for future elections begin to gather momentum.
Political Context and Growing Tensions
The revelation comes at a time of heightened political activity across the country, with opposition figures engaging in consultations and coalition-building efforts. Peter Obi, who was the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, remains an influential voice in Nigeria’s opposition politics and continues to attract significant public support.
Akpata’s recent move to the ADC has also drawn attention, particularly in Edo State, where political alignments are shifting ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
Analysts say the convergence of prominent political actors at the Benin meeting may have heightened sensitivities, especially in a state known for its vibrant and sometimes fiercely contested political landscape.
Although there is no official confirmation from security agencies regarding the alleged plot, the disclosure has intensified calls for improved protection for political figures and stricter enforcement of security protocols during high-profile gatherings.
Calls for Calm and Investigation
Reacting to the development, some party supporters have urged security agencies to thoroughly investigate the claims and identify any individuals who may have intended to disrupt the political meeting.
Others have called for calm, warning against speculation until security authorities provide further clarity on the matter.
Akpata, however, maintained that the purpose of going public with the information was not to incite fear but to underscore the importance of vigilance in Nigeria’s evolving political climate.
He stressed that democracy thrives in an atmosphere of safety and open engagement, noting that threats of violence should have no place in the nation’s political discourse.
Security Concerns in Political Activities
The alleged assassination threat adds to a series of security concerns that have trailed political engagements in various parts of the country in recent times. Political rallies and strategy meetings have occasionally been disrupted by violence, prompting renewed debate about the safety of political actors and supporters alike.
Security experts argue that proactive intelligence sharing and rapid response mechanisms are critical in preventing attacks, especially during gatherings involving high-profile personalities.
In the Benin case, Akpata credited security personnel for acting swiftly once the alerts were received, suggesting that their intervention may have deterred any planned action.
Silence from Authorities
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor other security agencies have issued an official statement confirming or denying the alleged plot. Efforts to obtain further details about any ongoing investigation were unsuccessful.
Similarly, Peter Obi has not publicly commented on the specific incident, though he has previously emphasized the need for peaceful political engagement and national unity.
The absence of detailed information has left room for speculation, but party insiders insist that the threat was credible enough to warrant immediate precautionary measures.
Democracy and the Need for Protection
Political analysts say the reported threat underscores the fragile nature of Nigeria’s democratic space, where political rivalry can sometimes escalate into hostility.
They argue that regardless of party affiliation, all political actors deserve adequate protection to freely participate in democratic processes without fear of intimidation or violence.
For Akpata and Obi, the incident appears to have reinforced the necessity of robust security planning for political events, particularly in periods of heightened political activity.
While the alleged attack was ultimately averted, the episode has reignited conversations about political tolerance, the responsibilities of security agencies, and the urgent need to safeguard democratic engagement in Nigeria.
As the nation inches closer to another electoral cycle, stakeholders say ensuring the safety of political leaders and citizens alike must remain a top priority.
