Nigerian actress Miriam Ogbonna has defended her recent comments on sex workers, stating that her intention was to expose what she described as widespread societal hypocrisy rather than promote prostitution.
In an interview with Saturday Beats, Ogbonna explained that although many people publicly condemn prostitution, the practice continues because of ongoing patronage.
According to her, the contradiction between public criticism and private actions is a reality many choose to ignore.
She argued that if there were no demand, many women involved in the trade would seek alternative means of livelihood. However, she noted that criticism often comes from the same society that sustains the industry behind closed doors.
Ogbonna maintained that her statement about better pay was meant to highlight the difficult nature of the work and the inconsistency in how society treats those involved. She added that her comments were not an endorsement of the profession but a reflection of uncomfortable truths.
Reacting to the backlash, the actress said she was not entirely surprised. She described social media as a space where people often project moral standards that do not align with their real-life behaviour.
Beyond the controversy, Ogbonna also spoke about her career. She revealed that while she enjoys acting, she finds her best creative ideas when writing in solitude. She described herself as outspoken and committed to addressing sensitive issues.
She added that her goal is to build a legacy rooted in honesty, hard work, and the courage to discuss topics many avoid.
