The Federal Government of Nigeria through the minister of information Mohammed Idris has addressed the deadly attack in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos North, Plateau State, where at least 28 people were killed, as a local security issue rather than a collapse of national security.
Mohammed Idris stated that the killings were perpetrated by criminals in a conflict-prone area and do not represent a total breakdown of national security.
President Bola Tinubu met with intelligence chiefs regarding the incident and condemned the attacks, describing them as an “affront to all that Nigeria stands for”.
The Plateau State government imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North, and the Senate directed an investigation by the Inspector-General of Police.
The attack is part of a series of security challenges in Nigeria’s middle belt, with local leaders calling for enhanced security measures to protect against similar incidents.
While some officials may downplay the national impact, the killings were heavily condemned by the president and prompted immediate federal and state intervention.
