Atiku Abubakar, former Nigerian Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, has criticized President Bola Tinubu, arguing that a minimum wage earner in Kenya takes home the equivalent of about N170,000, significantly higher than Nigeria’s N70,000 minimum wage.
Atiku made this assertion to highlight the extreme cost-of-living differences and earning capacity between the two nations, arguing that Nigerian workers face harsher economic conditions despite President Tinubu’s economic policies.
The statement noted that a minimum wage earner in Nairobi, Kenya, earns roughly N170,000, which is more than double Nigeria’s N70,000.
Atiku further argued that Kenya’s GDP per capita is almost double that of Nigeria and that, despite lower fuel prices in Nigeria, the income-to-expenditure ratio makes life in Nigeria “crushing” compared to Kenya.
The statement went further to slam the President for focusing on “statistical convenience” rather than the welfare of citizens, urging him to address the actual income of Nigerians.
