Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged that he will spend his holidays within Nigeria if elected president in 2027, saying he would use such periods to visit parts of the country grappling with insecurity.
Obi made the pledge on Saturday at a town hall meeting in Kaduna, where he said his administration would prioritise strengthening the country’s security architecture, reports Daily Trust.
“And let me assure you, in four years, I will never take holidays outside this country. If I take a whole day, it will be in Zamfara, Borno, Kano.
“It will be in Oyo, in Ondo. That is what it should be,” he said.
Obi said the security situation should not be such that Nigerians would be afraid to travel from one part of the country to another because of the threat of kidnapping.
He recalled that he used to travel by road from Lagos to Kaduna and other parts of the country, saying his administration would work to restore confidence in inter-state movement.
“When I tell people I’m coming to Kaduna this morning, everybody’s telling you, are you sure? Are you not sure? How?
“I used to drive from Lagos to Kaduna everywhere. So we assure you it is going to change,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor also pledged to introduce policies aimed at expanding opportunities for children regardless of their social or economic backgrounds.
“We want policies where every child will go to school, a nation where a child of nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody,” he said.
Obi’s comments came as he outlined his vision of a Nigeria where security, education and equal opportunity would be central to governance.
