Three suspects have been arrested over the alleged killing of a family of six at Oloba Village in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State, with police alleging that the attack was carried out in retaliation for damage to a mobile phone.
The suspects — Hammed Akinbami, Ojo Akinbami and Padonu Edward — were among several suspects paraded by the Oyo State Police Command in connection with three separate criminal cases.
They were paraded at the command headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, where the police gave details of the investigations and displayed some of the items allegedly recovered from the suspects.
According to the command, the suspects allegedly invaded the residence of Ifeanyi Chukwu, his wife and their four children, armed with a locally made Dane gun, two cutlasses and a wooden club.
The police alleged that the attack followed a dispute over damage to a mobile phone belonging to one of the suspects.
During the attack, the suspects allegedly stole N200,000, a motorcycle, a Doma machine fitted with chainsaw and a spraying machine.
The command further alleged that the attackers used a wooden club to kill four members of the family.
Police said the two children who survived the initial assault were subsequently taken to the Osun River, where their hands and legs were allegedly tied before they were thrown into the river.
The command said the remains of the woman had been recovered from the river, while efforts were continuing to recover the remains of the other victims.
The police said the three suspects were still being investigated to determine their individual roles in the alleged attack and establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Three arrested over Ibadan robbery, killing
In a separate case, the command paraded three suspected members of an armed robbery gang — Oluwatobi Akinrinola, Mathew Okunola and Ibrahim Rabiu — over an alleged robbery operation at Wofun Olodo, Ibadan.
The operation reportedly resulted in the death of 44-year-old Mrs Wahab Rukayat.
According to the police, the suspects allegedly attacked their victims and made away with mobile phones, wristwatches, $400 and other valuables estimated at N3.493 million.
The command said an iPhone 7 Plus belonging to one of the victims was recovered from the suspects.
It added that surviving victims identified the suspects during an identification parade.
Some of the victims who were invited to the command headquarters to identify the suspects also alleged that they were subjected to severe torture during the robbery, while property worth millions of naira was reportedly taken from them.
The police said investigation was ongoing to establish the suspects’ alleged roles in the robbery and killing and determine whether other members of the gang were still at large.
Police arrest alleged fake doctor
The third case involved the arrest of Benjamin Adeniyi, described by the police as an auxiliary nurse accused of practising medicine as a doctor without the required qualifications and professional training.
Adeniyi reportedly told investigators that he had been practising as a medical doctor since 2022 despite not possessing the requisite qualifications.
The police also alleged that he operated two hospitals under the name LIFE IS GOOD in the Olodo and Academy areas of Ibadan, where he allegedly offered medical services, including fertility treatment.
The command said investigations were underway to establish the full extent of his activities and identify patients who may have been exposed to risks as a result of the alleged illegal practice.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said investigations into the three cases were ongoing.
Ayanlade said the command was intensifying efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents, apprehend other persons who might have been involved and ensure that anyone found culpable was brought to justice.
