The Senate of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, has expelled a final-year student, Chiamaka Nora Onyewuenyi, over a viral social media post in which she allegedly made false claims about her academic project and supervisor.
The university said the student, who was in the Department of English and Literary Studies, claimed in an interview that her project topic was “Citizenship” and that her supervisor wrote the project for her, reports The PUNCH.
However, the institution said the claims were untrue and that the student reportedly admitted making them to generate content for social media.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Ngozi Okiridu, disclosed the expulsion in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Monday, saying the decision was taken by the Senate to deter other students from engaging in similar conduct.
“The Senate has expelled Miss Onyewuenyi Chiamaka Nora with Matriculation Number U/2022/19900, a final-year student of the Department of English and Literary Studies, over damaging content creation,” the statement read.
The university recalled that the student’s interview went viral after she allegedly claimed that her project topic was “Citizenship”, which the institution said was not a recognised project topic in her department.
It added that she also alleged that her supervisor wrote the project on her behalf.
According to the statement, the university management attempted to persuade the student to withdraw the comments, but she declined.
The institution described the content as damaging to its reputation and warned that it would not tolerate such behaviour.
It said the expulsion was intended to serve as a warning to other students against making claims that could harm the university’s image.
