Seven people have been killed after gunmen stormed Gero community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, opening fire on residents at relaxation spots and nearby shops in a fresh attack.
The assailants reportedly struck at about 9:30 p.m. on Monday, catching residents off guard and leaving seven people dead.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the killings in a telephone interview with Channels Television, saying the victims’ bodies had been deposited in a mortuary.
Tengwong called on the Plateau State Government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance and intensify security operations to prevent further attacks and protect residents.
He also urged the authorities to identify and arrest those responsible for the killings and ensure they were brought to justice.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed that an incident had occurred in the community but said it was yet to verify the reported death toll.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Alfred Alabo, said arrangements were being made for officers to visit the area. He explained that the police could not confirm the casualty figure until he received a comprehensive briefing from the Divisional Police Officer responsible for the area.
Alabo said the Commissioner of Police’s prompt response reflected the command’s efforts to safeguard communities across the state.
He assured residents that the police would pursue the attackers, arrest those responsible and bring them to justice.
