Super eagles wombles up again, played draw with Zimbabwe in home world cup qualifying match in Uyo stadium

THE Super Eagles of Nigeria continued their shocking start to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with another 1-1 draw today, this time against Zimbabwe in Rwanda.

After a disappointing 1-1 draw against Lesotho in Uyo on Thursday, Nigeria needed to win today to put themselves back in contention for the sole ticket open to Group C.

Instead, they put up another woeful performance and needed to come from behind again to earn a point.

Walter Musona fired Zimbabwe into the lead midway into the first half at the Huye Stadium before substitute Kelechi Iheanacho drew the Super Eagles level in the second half.

Nigeria head coach Jose Peseiro rang the changes today, dropping Iheanacho, Jamilu Collins, Ademola Lookman, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Victor Boniface to the bench and replacing them with Terem Moffi, Bruno Onyemachi, Ola Aina, Joe Aribo, Moses Simon and debutant Nathan Tella.

Despite the changes, the Super Eagles were still flat and got punished in the 26th minute when Musona unleashed a fierce free-kick from around 30 yards out past Francis Uzoho in the Nigeria goal.

Peseiro made more adjustments at half-time, bringing on Iheanacho, Osayi-Samuel and Boniface for Tella, Frank Onyeka and Aina.

The changes paid off as Iheanacho netted the equaliser in the 67th minute off a pass from Simon.

The Super Eagles were spurred on by the equaliser for a few minutes before reverting to type and continuing with their timid efforts at breaking down the Warriors.

With the result, the Super Eagles are joint-second in Group C with Zimbabwe, with both on two points, one behind leaders South Africa.

If South Africa beat Rwanda on Tuesday, they would go four points clear of Nigeria after just two matches.

The other teams in the group, Lesotho and Benin Republic, play each other in Durban also on Tuesday.
