University graduate commits suicide after searching job for five years of graduating & submitting 500 applications
Masinde Muliro University graduate has committed suicide after failing to secure a job five years after completing her studies.
The deceased, Vera Omondi from Gem constituency graduated in 2019 with a degree in Science at the university.
Her body was found by her mother -Herine Okoth on Thursday, January 11, 2024, dangling inside a bathroom at her parents’ home in Umiru village Nyamninia sub-location with her academic certificates placed on her bed.
Confirming the incident, Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo noted that the mother Herine Okoth had gone to wake the deceased up when she noticed she was missing.
She then proceeded to the bathroom which is adjacent to Vera’s house only to find her body hanging in the bathroom with a rope around her neck.
“Mrs Okoth was shocked to find her daughter dangling from the rooftop,” Kimaiyo said.
Preliminary findings by the police have established that yesterday before the deceased went to sleep, she questioned her mum about her unemployment status.
“She had applied for more than 500 jobs without success and yet her mother was still struggling to sustain her,” Kimaiyo noted.
Further, Kimaiyo stated that the deceased did not leave behind any suicide notes but only left all her certificates on her bed.
He stated that the body has since been moved to the Yala sub-county hospital mortuary pending autopsy as investigations begin into the matter.
“We dashed to the scene and responded to the distress call. We moved the body to the Yala morgue pending postmodern analysis,” he added while advising parents and children suffering from depression to seek professional counselling from police and social workers.
