The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has stated emphatically that any Igbo person can contest in the 2027 Presidential Election.
This was contained in a press statement personally signed by Senator John Azuta Mbata, President General Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide on Wednesday, 27th August, 2025.
The statement reads:
“Any Igbo person who belongs to a political party and wants to contest any elections whatsoever in 2027 is free to do so.
“Any publications to the contrary is fake news, did not originate from Ohaneze Ndigbo and should be discountenanced by the entirety of Ndigbo.
” Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide is a socio-Cultural Organization of Ndigbo and not a political party. As such, Ohanaeze s not in a position to say, dictate or even advise on who should and shouldn’t contest elections in Nigeria in 2027 or at any time for that matter. Ndigbo are advised to continue their lawful political activities in the various political parties of their choice and membership.”
Few days ago a purportedly factional leader Isiguzoro in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state pushed out a statement saying no Igbo man will contest 2027 presidential election as every Igbo person is mandated to vote for Tinubu.
For some time the mainstream Ohaneze led by Senator John Azuka Mbata has come under severe and heavy criticisms for being docile and inactive particularly on crucial issues affecting ndi Igbo and the entire South East region.
Since his election as the president-general of Ohaneze Mbata had gone under and hardly voices out or acts as a formidable leader of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization like former leaders namely Professor Joe Irukwu and Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.
