The House of Representatives has amended the Electoral Act 2026 to criminalise dual membership of political parties.
Under the new provision, anyone found guilty of belonging to more than one political party at the same time will face a fine of ₦10 million, a maximum prison sentence of two years, or both.
The amendment was passed by the lower legislative chamber during plenary on Wednesday.
Lawmakers said the measure is aimed at strengthening party discipline and promoting transparency within Nigeria’s political system. The new penalty seeks to deter politicians and party members from maintaining affiliations with multiple political organisations simultaneously.
Further legislative processes are expected before the amendment takes full effect.
