The Sultan of Sokoto, Alh. Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared that it is entirely wrong for Christians to be subjected to Sharia law or courts.
He made the statement on Wednesday, December 10, at the opening of the 2025 triennial meeting of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council, NIREC, in Abuja, themed, “Collaboration of Inter-Religious Council with Government to Promote Peace in Nigeria.”
The Sultan emphasized that Sharia law is exclusively for Muslims, advising that Christians should not be compelled to dress or pray like Muslims.
While stressing that Sharia is purely 100 per cent for Muslims, Abubakar noted that Nigeria is more accurately a multi-religious country than a secular state.
He further highlighted that the government has not adopted Islam or Christianity as the state religion, but rather supports the development of both major faiths in the country.
Addressing calls for the abolition of Sharia law, the Sultan said that Nigeria permits the practice of all religions without undue external interference.
