Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has revealed why the federal government canceled this year’s Independence Day parade.
Speaking on Politics HQ on News Central TV, Dalung claimed the decision was tied to the current economic hardship ravaging Nigerians. He said allowing the parade to continue could have embarrassed the nation, as hungry officers might have collapsed during the march.
According to him, the government is only pretending about the real state of the country. Hunger, suffering, and discontent have spread across every sector of society, and even security officials are not spared.
“If you allow Nigerians to celebrate, it will be a parade of skeletons,” Dalung said, stressing that many citizens had lost weight and hope due to hardship.
He noted that President Bola Tinubu himself admitted that his policies have inflicted monumental pain on the masses but still asked them to endure.
Dalung concluded that canceling the parade was the “best decision” under the circumstances — not just to prevent officers from collapsing, but also to expose the depth of the nation’s crisis.
