U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Nigeria has been redesignated as a “country of particular concern” in response to allegations of widespread violence and persecution against Christians.
Trump made the announcement Friday in a post on his Truth Social platform, stating that the United States “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria, and numerous other countries.”
“We stand ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world,” Trump wrote.
The “country of particular concern” designation is typically used by the U.S. government to identify nations that engage in or tolerate severe violations of religious freedom. During his presidency, Trump’s administration had previously placed Nigeria on the same list, citing similar concerns.
Nigeria has faced ongoing religious and ethnic tensions, particularly in the Middle Belt and northern regions, where attacks by extremist groups and communal conflicts have claimed thousands of lives in recent years.
