Tragedy was narrowly averted in Lagos on Monday after a four-storey building housing a school collapsed minutes after students and teachers were evacuated in the Ogba area of the state.
The incident occurred around 12 p.m. at No. 11 Adudatu Street, behind County Hospital in the Aguda axis of Ogba.
The building reportedly housed Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College.
Eyewitnesses said students and staff quickly left the structure after noticing signs that the building was distressed.
According to a post on X by user @Eromosele6, the swift evacuation prevented what could have resulted in a major disaster.
Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service later arrived at the scene to secure the area and prevent residents from approaching the collapsed structure.
Emergency responders cordoned off the site while assessing the situation.
Part of the property, reportedly used for residential purposes, remained standing beside the section that collapsed.
As of the time of filing this report, no casualties had been recorded and authorities had yet to determine the cause of the collapse
