Over 30 killed as Fulani herdsmen attack Benue state communities
Over 30 people have been allegedly killed by the Fulani herdsmen in Naka, the headquarters of Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State
It was gathered that the herdsmen arrived Naka town in the late hour of Sunday when the residents of the town least expected them.
An eye witness and resident of Naka town, who spoke to our correspondent, noted that the attackers came at about 7pm that Sunday evening when a lot of people were relaxing in their houses.
The informant revealed that about thirty residents of the town were killed by the merciless herdsmen militia, adding that sixteen corpses have been recovered.
According to him, most people who were already relaxed in their houses, including women and children were butchered as the herders used machetes to butcher them.
With the attack on Naka town, it is clear that all the council wards of Gwer West Local Government Area have been sacked.
The attackers, who were armed with guns and other dangerous weapons were shooting at the residents and macheting old men, women and children.
Checks by NATIONAL ACCORD confirmed that a lot of people were still missing as it was not clear to state whether they were killed or not. While many others have fled Naka town for fear of the unknown.
The attack has led to closure of schools in the area even as commercial activities as well as farming in the area has equally been suspended for fear of been attacked in the farm.
Meanwhile the Benue State Police Command has confirmed the attacks in Naka as well as communities in Apa Local Government Area.
In a statement by the new Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP. Udeme Edet, the command acknowledged the incidents and assured residents that the tactical teams have been deployed to restore calm and order.
