PDP begs Peter Obi to return & rejoin the party regardless of ongoing coalition talks
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has appealed to Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Anambra governor, to return to its fold.
Obi, who ran as the PDP’s vice presidential candidate alongside Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 elections, left the party prior to the 2023 polls.
In a communiqué signed by the Anambra PDP chairman, Chidi Chidebe, the party maintained that any attempt to form a coalition ahead of the 2027 elections may not produce the desired results.
“The committee extends an open invitation to all aggrieved and former members of the PDP in Anambra, particularly our revered former governor, Mr Peter Obi, to return home and reunite with the now rejuvenated and restructured PDP,” the communiqué read.
“We will gladly welcome our brothers and sisters back to join us in the collective quest for a better Nigeria,” it continued.
The party also called on residents of the state to maintain their strong support for the PDP.
“We call on the good people of Anambra to remain steadfast in their historic support for the PDP and to come out en masse to vote for our candidates.”
Obi has recently been in conversations with Atiku Abubakar and other political figures on forming a united front to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Confirming the discussions, Atiku’s spokesman, Paul Ibe, noted that talks are ongoing between opposition leaders.
“Well, you and I know that there have been ongoing discussions between Atiku Abubakar and some opposition leaders: Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai,” he said in a recent interview.
“Yes, it’s out there in the open. Discussion is still ongoing, and at the end of that discussion, they will come out with a position and the direction that we’re going to follow based on the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians.”
When asked about the possibility of a joint ticket between Obi and Atiku, Ibe responded, “What I’m saying, in effect, is that that ticket was viable in 2019, and it’s still viable today.
“But it is left to the individuals to be able to come to a determination as to how they proceed. So, let us not go ahead of them. They are talking,” he added.
Meanwhile, Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State who left the APC earlier in the year, has joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which some believe may serve as the platform for the proposed coalition.
