A tense night unfolded along the Tuga border corridor in Kebbi State on Thursday as gunmen suspected to be bandits staged a deadly raid on the Nigeria Immigration Service’s (NIS) Bakin Ruwa checkpoint, leaving three officers dead and the facility in ruins.
The NIS confirmed the incident in a statement released by its spokesperson, Akinsola Akinlabi, who revealed that the attackers struck at about 10 p.m., unleashing gunfire that overwhelmed officers on duty.
“Three of our personnel were killed in the attack,” Akinlabi said, noting that operational equipment and structures at the checkpoint were also destroyed.
Shocked by the assault, the Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, has ordered what the service described as an immediate and robust tactical pushback.
The response includes deploying fresh reinforcements to the area, expanding joint security operations with other agencies, tightening intelligence activities along the Tuga axis, and increasing patrol visibility to prevent further incursions.
The NIS urged residents to stay calm and continue cooperating with security operatives.
It appealed for timely and credible information from the public as authorities intensify efforts to stabilize the vulnerable border zone.
