Bola Tinubu’s adviser, Femi Otubanjo, has delivered a scathing assessment of Donald Trump’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, saying the US President’s speech was a reflection of someone suffering from “spatial confusion’’, a mental state where an individual cannot accurately perceive their body’s position, motion, or altitude relative to their surroundings, reports Vanguard.
Donald Trump’s speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, was a mix of controversy and criticism. He claimed the U.S. is in the midst of the fastest and most dramatic economic turnaround, attributing this success to his policies. However, his remarks on Greenland, NATO, and European allies sparked debate and criticism.
Trump reiterated his desire to acquire Greenland, citing national security concerns, but ruled out using force. He also criticized European countries, saying they weren’t contributing enough to NATO and were “ungrateful” for U.S. protection. Specifically, he targeted Denmark for being unwilling to sell Greenland, and mocked French President Emmanuel Macron’s sunglasses.
The speech was met with mixed reactions, with some European leaders pushing back against Trump’s comments.
However, reacting to the speech, Otubanjo who faulted Trump said, the US president sounded like someone who didn’t know where he was, preaching American exceptionalism to a global audience expecting multilateral dialogue.
According to Otubanjo, much of the speech was delivered without reliance on the teleprompter, resulting in what he characterised as a rambling and undisciplined performance.
“Here was a man addressing an audience at Davos. Davos is a symbol of global multilateralism. And here he was, preaching American exceptionalism. He thought he was speaking to a MAGA audience. That’s why I talked about spatial confusion. Because if you listen to the rambling speech, some part of it, he allowed himself to use the teleprompter. But for the most part, it was on his own.’’
‘’The usual things you hear when he goes on campaign with his favorite audience. The speech lacked grace, lacked wit, lacked quality. The kind of thing that you expect from an American president was not there. You would notice that all through the speech, there was no laughter. There was no applause. And even when he finished, the applause was just there with just politeness.”
Otubanjo also criticised what he described as excessive personal attacks and inflammatory language. He noted that President Joe Biden was repeatedly mentioned in the opening minutes of the speech, often in derogatory terms, alongside dismissive remarks about other countries and industries.
During the interview, the research professor at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) also dared President Trump to revoke his Visa over the comments.
