The lifeless bodies of two newborn twin infants were discovered early Sunday in a drainage channel in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists on Sunday.
According to him, police operatives attached to the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters received information in the early hours of Sunday about the discovery of two lifeless twin infants who had been abandoned in a drainage channel along Cooperative Street, Nwokedi, Okpoko.
He stated that following the report, the operatives immediately swung into action by securing the scene, gathering vital evidence, and commencing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Ikenga disclosed that preliminary investigations led to the identification and arrest of the biological parents of the infants.
He said the suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting investigators in unraveling the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the discovery of the lifeless bodies of the twin infants in the drainage channel as a disturbing case of man’s inhumanity to man and a gross violation of the sanctity of human life.
The Commissioner commended the police operatives for their swift response and diligent investigative efforts, which resulted in the arrest of the parents of the deceased infants shortly after the incident was reported.
CP Orutugu strongly condemned the act, stressing that every child deserves protection, care, and the opportunity to live and thrive.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring that anyone found culpable in connection with the incident faces the full weight of the law.
According to Ikenga, investigations into the matter are ongoing, and further developments will be communicated to the public in due course.
