Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has disclosed that construction of the runway for the state’s proposed airport is nearing completion, as he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering a world-class aviation facility capable of driving economic growth and investment.
Otti made the disclosure on Thursday in Lagos during the unveiling of two newly acquired Boeing 737-800 Next Generation (NG) aircraft by United Nigeria Airlines, describing the development as a significant milestone for Nigeria’s aviation industry and a reflection of growing investor confidence in indigenous enterprises.
The governor commended the airline for naming the aircraft after two eminent Nigerians, the late novelist Chinua Achebe and Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, noting that the gesture was a fitting recognition of excellence, leadership and service to humanity.
According to him, celebrating individuals whose contributions have shaped society helps preserve national values, inspire future generations, and strengthen collective identity.
“The acquisition of these aircraft is a testament to the growing confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector and the resilience of indigenous enterprises,” Otti said.
He also praised the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, for providing reform-driven leadership and fostering an environment that encourages private-sector participation in the aviation industry.
The governor specifically highlighted ongoing federal initiatives aimed at supporting local carriers, including aircraft leasing arrangements, which he said would improve access to aviation assets, enhance operational efficiency and stimulate sector-wide growth.
Speaking on the Abia Airport project, Otti expressed appreciation to the minister for his support, revealing that work on the airport runway has reached an advanced stage and is close to completion.
He said the project remains a critical component of the state’s economic transformation agenda and would enhance connectivity, attract investment, and facilitate trade and position Abia as a strategic commercial hub in the South-East.
Otti congratulated the Chairman and Founder of United Nigeria Airlines, Obiora Okonkwo, as well as the airline’s management and stakeholders, for expanding the carrier’s fleet and contributing to job creation, economic development, and the growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
