Iconic and legendary Nigerian footballer Austin Jay Jay Okocha has received the FIFA World Cup Superior Player of the Match Winner award in recognition of his outstanding display during Nigeria’s famous victory over Spain at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
The former Super Eagles captain delivered a memorable performance as Nigeria stunned one of the tournament favourites 3-2 in their opening Group D match in France.
Okocha was instrumental throughout the contest, inspiring Nigeria’s comeback after Spain had taken an early lead. The Super Eagles responded with goals from Mutiu Adepoju and Garba Lawal before a late own goal by Andoni Zubizarreta sealed a famous victory for the African side.
