A newlywed couple, identified as Funmilayo Bamidele and her husband, Reverend Abiodun David, have been abducted along the Iyemero-Eruku Road on the border between Kwara and Kogi states.
The couple were reportedly kidnapped alongside four other persons on Saturday evening while returning from their engagement ceremony in Eruku.
Sources said the group was expected to travel through Isanlu Road but the driver opted for a back route to drop off the Best Man and other members of the group at Iyamoye in Kogi State.
The vehicle was reportedly intercepted by armed bandits along the Iyemero-Eruku Road, with the couple and the other occupants taken away.
A photograph of the newly kidnapped couple has since emerged following the incident.
Confirming the abduction, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, said security operatives had launched a joint operation to rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.
Ojo said soldiers were already combing the surrounding bush in an effort to locate the abductors and free the victims.
He added that the vehicle conveying the victims had been recovered and found parked at an abandoned police station in Ayetoro, Ekiti State.
According to the commissioner, police operatives from the affected states were working together on the rescue operation because the incident occurred within a border area involving Kwara, Kogi and Ekiti states.
Further details on the whereabouts of the other abducted passengers and the circumstances surrounding the attack were still being awaited as of press time.
