The family of the beheaded Oyo State teacher, Michael Oyedokun Olugbade, has rejected ₦500,000 and bags of rice brought by President Bola Tinubu’s daughter to the deceased’s wife, insisting they want the recovery of his body for a proper burial rather than palliative gestures.
Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju, who is representing the family, issued a strong statement on the development.
“President Tinubu’s daughter visited the wife of our late client in Oyo State with 2 bags of rice and N500k. We insist that rice is not the solution to insecurity issues in Nigeria. The Tinubu-led government has failed to recover the body of our late client so that his family can organize a burial for him.”
The family’s rejection comes amid growing frustration over the handling of the abduction incident that occurred on May 15, 2026, when armed gunmen attacked schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, abducting dozens of pupils and teachers. One teacher, Oyedokun, was later beheaded by his captors, with a gruesome video circulating online. Several other children and teachers remain in captivity weeks after the incident.
Adeyanju and the family have repeatedly called on President Tinubu to personally intervene to ensure the recovery of the body and the safe release of the remaining victims.
This situation stands in stark contrast to the swift rescue of relatives of former Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu. The ex-minister’s sister and her twin sons were kidnapped on June 3, 2026, and rescued by police operatives just a few days later on June 6, with two kidnappers neutralized in the operation. Meanwhile, the Oyo schoolchildren and teachers abducted in mid-May continue to languish in captivity with limited visible progress in their rescue.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, protests, and criticism of the government’s response to insecurity, particularly in the education sector.
