The association known as African communities in Manitoba (ACOMI) has once again reiterated it’s continued and sustained look out for the well being of the elderly African people in Manitoba.
This was displayed yesterday when it organized a get together of both men and women who are basically from 50 years and above to an evening of fun, interactions and movie.
In his opening remarks the Coordinator of the group Gbadebo Adefila welcomed everyone by stating that the programme is out for them to ensure that whatever is due to them will be extended to them. He mentioned the food distribution that took place in the month of June and said it will be a continuous exercise.
In his own speech a project coordinator Mr Ghirmai said that the association has expanded in leaps and bounds by not only limiting it to people of African descent but has included people from the Caribbeans. He also said that one of the purposes of the association is to give the elders appropriate foods of African origin.
In her own presentation the executive director Maggie Yeboah said that whatever is due to elders from Africa will be extended to them as she revealed that most of support comes from the government of Canada.
The theme of the movie was The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind and it made an interesting watch as it validated the saying that it is only focus and determination that can lead to success. The determination of a young boy in a Mozambique rural community led to him inventing a technology that is used to pump water by harnessing power from the wind.
To wrap up the fantastic evening each participant was handed a big Ghana Must Go bag containing assorted food items that was so heavy to the extent that most of the seniors could not drag it.
