President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed Mr. Wale Edun as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy in a minor cabinet reshuffle announced today. Edun, who has held the position since August 2023, has been directed to hand over to Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, a tax expert and former Minister of State for Finance
The decision was communicated via a memo from Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume. Edun was sacked alongside Ahmed Muda Dangiwa, Minister of Housing and Urban Development. Presidency sources cited internal tensions within the economic management team and the need for “strengthened cohesion and synergy” as factors behind the move.
In an unusual and widely shared reaction, staff from the Ministry of Finance were filmed setting up an elaborate mock funeral for their outgoing boss. A white coffin was placed on chairs in an outdoor area under tents, accompanied by a large portrait of Wale Edun and a condolence register. Video footage shows several individuals — some in traditional attire — approaching the setup, signing a book on a blue plastic chair placed beside the coffin, and appearing to mourn the minister’s departure.
The clip, which has gone viral on social media, was posted with the caption: “Tinubu sacked his Minister of Finance today. His staff immediately bought a coffin and opened what they call, a condolence register to mourn his departure from the Ministry. What could he have done to them?” It shows people queuing to sign the register, with some bending over the book while others mill about in the background near tents and banners.
The satirical display has sparked mixed reactions online, with some interpreting it as dark humour reflecting staff frustration or relief, while others see it as a creative protest against the sudden exit. No official statement has been issued by the ministry regarding the video.
